Abstract

The focus of this writing is on the status, strength, and meaning of lifelong marriage according to Canon Law, Can. No. 1141. Essentially, marriage is sacred, whole, and indissoluble. This characteristic is not only inherent in the Catholic Church but also in all religions worldwide. The author believes that many disharmonies in marriage are caused by various issues, such as breaking marital vows and failing to forgive each other. Jesus Christ taught forgiveness, so Catholic believers should be able to internalize, live out, and follow the example of Jesus Christ. This prompts the Catholic Church to reiterate that if misunderstandings occur between spouses, they should love, forgive, and pardon each other. The methodology used is phenomenology and text analysis. The author employs the Holy Scriptures, the Church document Gaudium Et Spes, the document Familiaris Consortio, the Encyclical Humanae Vitae, and Canon Law to understand and deepen the nature of lifelong marriage. This writing explains the importance of lifelong marriage in the context of the Catholic faith, as well as the commitment and fidelity embedded in the institution of lifelong marriage, which is legitimate and normal, occurring between a man and a woman.
